Loud Shirts, Louder Message

Bad Shirt Club was born from the bold idea that fashion should do more than just turn heads; it should spark conversations, build connections, and make a difference. We don’t just wear loud shirts for the laughs (though there are plenty of those); we wear them to champion something much louder, mental health.

Behind every flamboyant print and gloriously dodgy design is a mission that runs deep. We’re here to raise awareness and raise funds for mental health charities doing life-changing work. Every shirt sold helps support essential services because we believe that starting a conversation could be the first step in saving a life.

This isn’t just a clothing brand. It’s a movement. A rebellion against silence. And a reminder that being different should always be worn with pride.

In Memory of Aine

The Founders Story

In 2022, our founder, John, lost his best friend, Aine, to mental illness. Her loss shook the foundations of his world and lit a fire that would become the heart of everything we do. Aine was bright, funny, and fiercely loyal, the kind of person who lit up a room and checked in on others even when she was struggling herself. Losing her left a silence too big to ignore. Her passing was a heartbreaking reminder of how invisible mental health struggles can be, even in those who seem the strongest.

In the wake of her loss, John knew he had to do something constructive. He thought back to his solo backpacking days, when his bad shirts built confidence, sparked conversations and turned strangers into friends.

From this idea, Bad Shirt Club was born. A place where bold shirts can start real conversations that save lives, build confidence, raise mental health awareness, and ensure fewer people suffer in silence.

A shirt can’t bring someone back. But it can start a conversation that saves someone else.

Our Mission FAQs

A man in a colorful flamingo shirt laughs as a woman dressed in a large whoopee cushion costume pretends to press on his backside; both are having fun at an outdoor event.

At Bad Shirt Club, supporting mental health isn’t just a mission; it’s the reason we exist.

Our journey began from a place of deep personal loss. In 2022, our founder, John, lost his best friend Aine to suicide. Her passing was a heartbreaking reminder of how invisible mental health struggles can be, even in the people who seem the strongest. From that moment on, everything we’ve done, every shirt we design, every order we pack, every event we attend, has been shaped by a single purpose: to create real change around mental health.

We support mental health in four key ways:

1. Raising Awareness

Our bold, chaotic shirts are more than just eye-catching — they’re conversation starters. Wearing one sparks curiosity, breaks the ice, and invites meaningful dialogue around mental health. It’s a fun, wearable way to reduce stigma and encourage openness.

2. Fundraising for Mental Health Charities

We donate a large portion of profits to mental health organisations like Suffolk Mind, helping fund vital services such as crisis helplines, education programmes, and community outreach. In January 2025, for example, we helped fund Suffolk Mind’s helpline, supporting hundreds of people in moments of need.

3. Creating a Supportive Community

Bad Shirt Club isn’t just a brand, it’s a movement. Through our social channels, events, and partnerships, we’re building a growing community that champions empathy, inclusion, and courage. Our audience helps spread the message that it's okay not to be okay, and that you’re never alone.

4. Honouring A Legacy

Everything we do is driven by love and memory. Aine’s story lives on in every shirt we sell, every conversation we spark, and every life we touch. She reminds us why checking in matters, and why even something as simple as a shirt can help change, or even save, a life.

In short: Bad Shirt Club uses fashion as a force for good, turning bold shirts into bold action for mental health.

Bad Shirt Club was born from a mix of heartbreak and the need to make a difference.

It started with solo backpacking trips and a suitcase full of loud, ridiculous shirts. For our founder, John, those shirts weren’t just a way to stand out, they became unexpected bridges to others. People would stop, smile, laugh, and strike up conversations. They helped break the ice in new cities, spark friendships, and build confidence in the most unlikely places. What started as a quirky fashion choice slowly revealed its power: a bad shirt could open up the world.

But in 2022, everything changed. John lost his best friend, Aine Kerlin, to suicide. Aine was bright, kind, and the type of person who made others feel seen even when she was struggling herself. Her loss shook John to his core and forced a difficult question: What now?

In the silence that followed, John returned to the memory of those shirts, how they brought people together, how they made others feel comfortable to open up. He realised that if something as simple as a shirt could start conversations, then maybe it could start the right ones. The ones we too often avoid. The ones that matter most.

And so, Bad Shirt Club's purpose today is not just to sell clothing, but to build a platform for mental health awareness, real human connection, and lasting impact. Every shirt became a conversation starter. Every sale helped fund mental health services. And every step forward carried the memory of Aine and the mission to ensure fewer people suffer in silence.

At its heart, Bad Shirt Club exists to remind people of this: You’re not alone. You’re allowed to be bold. And sometimes, the loudest shirts can speak the gentlest truths.

Wearing a “bad” shirt, one that’s loud, clashing, chaotic, and unapologetically bold, does something unexpectedly powerful: it frees you.

At Bad Shirt Club, we’ve seen it happen time and time again. The moment someone puts on one of our gloriously questionable designs, something shifts. There’s laughter. There’s a smile. There’s a spark of mischief. And suddenly, the usual pressure to look polished, trendy, or socially acceptable disappears. You stop worrying about fitting in, because you’re owning the fact that you don’t want to.

That’s the magic.

Bad shirts give you permission to stop taking yourself so seriously. They break down the walls we build around how we “should” look and act, making space for something more authentic: joy. When you wear something so playfully outrageous, people naturally gravitate towards you. They smile. They ask questions. They strike up conversations. And whether you’re the life of the party or quietly finding your feet, the shirt does the talking; it becomes a beacon for connection and confidence.

For people struggling with low mood, anxiety, or low self-esteem, this can be transformational. A bad shirt reminds you that it’s okay to take up space, to be seen, and to express yourself, even when words are hard to find.

So yes, our shirts may look like fashion disasters, but they’re designed with purpose:
To lift heads, turn heads, and raise spirits. To make you and the people around you feel just that little bit lighter.

Because sometimes, a silly shirt is the first step toward feeling good again.

At Bad Shirt Club, we believe that a conversation can change or even save a life. But starting one isn’t always easy, especially when it comes to mental health. That’s where bad shirts come in.

Wearing a wild, clashing, questionably stylish shirt creates an instant icebreaker. It catches attention, turns heads, and often leads with one of the most powerful phrases:
“I have to ask… where did you get that shirt?”

What follows is often laughter, curiosity, and connection, whether it’s with a stranger at a party, a colleague in the office, or a friend who suddenly opens up. In a world where most people are glued to screens and walking with their heads down, a shirt that demands attention breaks the routine. It invites interaction, humour, and most importantly, dialogue.

And because each shirt from Bad Shirt Club has a purpose stitched into its seams, raising awareness and funding for mental health, that initial chuckle often evolves into something deeper. You get the chance to talk about why you wear it. About the cause. About the friend you lost. About the struggles that often go unseen. And suddenly, a bold print becomes a platform.

It’s not about fashion. It’s about human connection.

We've seen it happen again and again. Someone walks into a room wearing a shirt that’s too loud to ignore, and before long, they’re having a conversation they never expected. Real, honest, meaningful. The kind that reminds people they're not alone.

That’s the heart of Bad Shirt Club: Turning something ridiculous into something revolutionary. Because the right shirt, the “wrong” one, can start the right conversation.

Getting involved with Bad Shirt Club isn’t just about throwing on something wild, it’s about standing up for something meaningful. Whether you want to champion mental health, raise awareness, or simply spread a little joy through fashion, there are loads of ways to join our mission:

  • Love the Bad Shirt Club 🫶🏼😎

The shirt was outrageous, loud and certainly caused a lot of comments, but one thing it was not is bad. It is actually well made, fits great, is comfortable, and I think it's a good value.
